Florida Bed and Breakfast – A Trip Back in Time
Florida Bed and Breakfast – A Trip Back in Time
Florida achieved statehood on March 3, 1845 but the beginnings of one of
the oldest Florida Bed and Breakfast Inns predate Florida’s entry into
statehood by more than 50 years. In
fact, one historical luxury bed and breakfast in St. Augustine, Florida is
housed in a building dating to 1791.
The historical roots of bed and breakfast inns date back to the 1700’s
when for the first time people other than soldiers and religious pilgrims began
travelling for business and pleasure. At
the time, many stagecoach inns began popping up on well travelled roads
primarily for the stabling of horses and overnight lodging of travelers.
A revitalization of this concept can be found in today’s bed and
breakfast inns. The earliest versions
provided for the overnight comfort as well as the sustenance of their
travelling clientele at a very basic level.
Today, bed and breakfast inns may contain almost every amenity possible,
but still preserve the ambiance and hospitality of a bygone age. There is perhaps no better place to find this
return to old world gentility than in Florida, and nowhere better in Florida
than in St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. Not only is St. Augustine ripe with history,
it is also ranked as the 8th most popular summer destination in the
United States for 2011. There is no
better way to immerse yourself in the history of this historical destination
than including a stay at a B&B during your visit.
It is estimated that there are over 20,000 B&Bs in the United States,
and over 700 of them are found in Florida.
St. Augustine alone is home to more than 30 of them. Located throughout the area, you can find
inns to accommodate almost every budget and level of comfort.
Also known as Old City, St. Augustine is brimming with both old and new
world charm. Among the historical sites are
the Oldest Store Museum, the Oldest Wooden School House, the Oldest House (a
National Historic Landmark,) and the Old Jail. Located nearby are the St. Augustine
lighthouse and museum, the Presidio, Fort Matanzas and the city’s historic
district noted for shops and boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, food,
gifts and outstanding historical charm. In
fact, the editors of AAA travel ranked St. Augustine as one of North America’s
“Ten Most Walkable Cities”. The historic district of 144 square blocks includes
29 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, allowing
visitors to walk through over four centuries of history including the Plaza de
la Constitucion, which was established by royal decree in the 16th century.
After your walking tour of the Old City, you can relax and enjoy endless
days of sunshine at the beach with swimming, diving, kayaking, fishing or
boating or landlocked activities such as picnicking, tennis or golf. At the end of the day there is no better way
to complete your memories than by enveloping yourself within the comforts of
one of St. Augustine’s many B&Bs.
If you love history, ambiance and being pampered, take a trip back in
time to a Florida Bed and Breakfast in St. Augustine, Florida.
